Which Luna Dream sling is best for the beginning?

Choosing the right sling for the beginning can be a difficult task. The wide choice of designs and sizes can easily confuse parents. In this article, you will learn what things you should pay your attention to in order to pick the sling that meets all your expectations.

Fabric type

The first important thing is the type of a fabric and weave. At the beginning, we do not recommend using a sling with a plain weave. Such weave can be seen in bedsheets and its typical feature is that it doesn’t stretch diagonally, it doesn’t work and fold to baby’s body. That’s why you can find it challenging to ensure a correct posture of your baby in such sling.

Weaves that prove to be perfect for babywearing include a broken twill weave, diamond and jacquard, heart weaves.

Broken twill or diamond slings are mostly striped, the stripes have different colors on the edges. Thanks to it, persons starting to learn ties can easily manage to find the correct edge during tightening a sling tie. Such weave and design of slings makes them highly recommended for the beginning.

For additional easiness of tying, each Luna Dream sling has the center marked on both sides, it’s the starting point of any sling wrap. What’s more, our slings have also reversed colors on edges, it gives you a head start even in jacquard, not striped, slings, so that you can tell the upper and lower edge apart almost immediately. It means, that you don’t have to limit the choice of your first sling.

Sling composition

In most cases, slings are made of 100% cotton or with linen, bamboo or wool additives. Similarly to clothes, the quality of the yarn used for weaving a sling influences the comfort of wearing it.

For the sling manufacturing, we use only combed cotton, that is soft and mellow since the beginning. It doesn’t need a special breaking process, it’s the process of long softening the fabric to give it a desired softness, allowing comfortable tying. It’s essential to pay your attention to the origin of fabrics. All fabrics used in Luna Dream are certified with Oeko-Tex Standard 100, which guarantees their safety, e.g. in terms of artificial colorants.

Depending on a composition, we get various results:

-          A sling with bamboo additives is softer and silky smooth. After the first wash the silkiness disappears but the sling is still smooth and soft. This kind of sling is useful during summer, also because of its antibacterial properties.

-          Linen and wool additives increase a carrying capacity of slings, they are usually heavier and recommended for children weighing more than 8-10 kg.

Sling weight

Weight is nothing more than determining the thickness of a sling. It’s calculated in grams of fabric per square meter. The thicker a sling is, the larger carrying capacity it has. However, it also gets more difficult to tighten during the tying. For the beginners, we recommend slings weighing 240-240g/m2. Such slings ensure the comfort of babies up to 10kg and they are way easier to tie. For parents looking for one sling for the whole babywearing period, we recommend jacquard slings weighing 280-300g/m2. With some practice, they will be perfect even for rookies.

Sling length

The length of a sling is determined by the size of a babywearing person. The easiest way is to choose a sling size according to clothes size you wear, e.g. if you usually wear L size, look for a sling that’s also in L size (4.6m). Then you can be sure that a given size is suitable for the majority of popular wraps. If your dimensions are somewhere between two sizes, pick the larger one.

You ask us frequently, what size you should choose if daddy wears larger clothes that mummy but you still want only one sling. If the difference in your clothes is within two sizes, choose a sling tailored for daddy. If mummy ties a bit larger sling, one extra knot is enough to adjust the length of sling ends.

The length should be also chosen while taking into account the type of carries you are going to tie. The most popular carry for the beginning is usually a kangaroo carry or a pocket wrap cross carry.
