Babywearing in a sling or a carrier for persons suffering from sciatica

In this article, we would like to cover the topic of babywearing for those suffering from sciatica symptoms. The problem of sciatica is more and more common and it stems from the progress of civilization. Longer working hours in front of a computer and less activity causes severe pain in the lumbar spine. The pain becomes more severe both in standing and sitting position.

During a sciatica attack it is recommended to lie down and rest, so that the inflammation of the sciatic nerve passes more quickly. However, it is a serious problem for a young mum suffering from sciatica and staying alone with a baby crying out for being carried. In such situations carrying a little baby causes flexing the lower spine muscles in an attempt of maintaining the vertical body position. This leads to increased pain and sciatica nerves irritation.

There is a way to alleviate the pain in such moments – carrying a baby in the sling. Thanks to the correct sling tying, baby’s weight is evenly distributed on parent’s body, without overloading the lower spine. In addition, tying a sling around the reins improves parent’s body stability during walking.

A baby carrier can also be helpful, since, similarly to the sling, it ensures a much better baby weight distribution in contrast to carrying them in arms. What is more, both in the sling and ergonomically-designed carrier we can wear babies on our back. During the back carry, a body slightly leans back, which alleviates the pain as well.

I share my practical knowledge in this text. For a few years I have been fighting sciatica and, if it wasn’t for the sling, I wouldn’t have carried my son during longer walks or gone on active holiday trips with him.

Sciatica can have different symptoms, that’s why you should see a doctor or physiotherapist first. He should confirm the possibility of using the sling or carrier in your particular case.
